Day 1
Horse[1] 14 of year 104 HH
In order of appearance, with point of view characters at the top:
Firekeeper, a wolf-raised woman in the depths of the forest, hears a sentry howl relayed from the pass through the Iron Mountains. The howl is "Strangers! Strangers! Strangers! Strange!". She continues preparing a rabbit for eating.
Meanwhile, Derian Carter guides horses and pack animals through the pass. He is accompanied by many others, most prominently the Earl Kestrel. We learn of his one-sided rivalry with a man named Race Forester, and of minor injuries to his back and feet. As they set up camp, there is some discussion of the division of labor and of what their quest is. We learn that they are seeking the King's son, one Prince Barden, who had been out of contact with civilization for over a decade.
Back in the woods, the Whiner delivers a summons to Firekeeper, letting her know that the Ones wish to discuss the sentry howl with her. There is some verbal sparring before she departs to meet them. Upon greeting them, we learn that she considers these Ones to be her parents. Firekeeper learns that the humans are going to the Burnt Place, where Barden's colony once was. We learn of a promise made to her mother that one day Firekeeper be reintroduced to humanity. Firekeeper cries the pack together so that they may meet the pups who are ready to emerge from their den.
In Derian's camp we learn of Prince Barden's backstory. We learn that Barden, being both too-tightly controlled and redundant to the succession, fled Hawk Haven to found a colony of his own on the other side of the mountains. We learn that he was disinherited, but that years later both of his siblings died. We learn that there is now a succession crisis, and that this largely motivated their trip west.
This night, Firekeeper dreams of times long ago, when she was first learning to tend to fires. At first she is with the One Female of that time, but as dreams do, this shifts to being someone named Mother. In the dream, her name is Tamara. The dream shifts once more to that of the Burnt Place when it was still aflame. Donal Hunter is struck by a burning beam. Sarena, his wife, carries the child outside before returning to try and save him. Wolves attempt to rescue the both of them, but it is clear from the description that they are both dying painfully and quickly. Firekeeper awakes screaming.
